Underworld crackdown: Anti-Gang officer charged with corruption

The Anti-Gang Unit member is alleged to have been the mole in the police’s efforts to combat gang violence in Cape Town.
The law enforcement fight-back campaign against the criminal underworld has picked up steam over the past week and the latest triumph came from the discovery of a mole in the Western Cape’s Anti-Gang Unit.
Anti-Gang Unity officer arrested for fraud
On the same day notorious underworld boss Nafiz Modack made his first appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court, days after his dramatic arrest, police released a statement, confirming the arrest of “a 39-year-old member attached to the Tactical Response Team.”
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the member and three others were nabbed in an arrest operation led by Police Minister Bheki Cele’s National Task Team over the weekend.
“It’s alleged that the suspect has between 2019 and 2020, enticed by an underworld figure to infiltrate the Anti-Gang Unit and supply them with information relating to operations of the underworld figure in return for gratification,” Col. Mogale expanded in a statement.
The tainted officer and three of his accomplices will make their first court appearance at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
Is this linked to Nafiz Modack?
The coincidence of the timing can’t be overlooked. The arrest of the officer comes days after Modack, a man with deep links to the deathly security turf war plaguing nightlife in Cape Town, and three of his alleged henchmen were nabbed in Century City in what turned out to be a dramatic confrontation.
Modack is fingered as the alleged mastermind behind the cold-blooded murder of detective Charl Kinnear who was at the centre of an underworld investigation.
It is also believed that the crude businessman had something to do with the attempted murder of renowned criminal lawyer William Booth.
On Monday, Modack and his co-accused appeared briefly in court with a gleeful Cele part of the audience. Matters in the case were handled quickly and the suspects have been remanded in custody until they are called back on to the dock on Friday 7 May 2021.

At this time, it is unclear if the arrest of the anti-gang member is connected, in any way, to the ongoing prosecution against Modack.
