The Two Oceans Marathon will take place after all, the City of Cape Town confirmed in a statement.
Two Oceans Marathon gets the greenlight
This year’s edition of the iconic race was riddled with controversy following complaints from religious leaders about the inconveniences brought on by the popular event.
More specifically, church leaders were not too pleased about the road closures that negatively impact the commemoration of Easter. After all, this period is crucial for churches.
However, following consultations between Two Oceans Marathon organisers, religious leaders and the City of Cape Town, a decision was reached to give allow the event to continue as planned, with a two-day run.
“To mitigate the impact on any worshippers or other individuals going about their business, the City’s Traffic Services will work with marathon marshals to ensure worshippers are able to gain access to intersections along the route and ensure they are not unreasonably restricted in reaching their properties or places of business at all times,” the City noted.
The compromise, however inconvenient it was for churches, did come with a mandatory stipulation. The Two Oceans Marathon may be forced to move the iconic event away from the Easter weekend in future.
