The funeral of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be held at the St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, on Saturday 1 January 2022, and motorists have been advised to take heed of these road closures.
How to watch Desmond Tutu funeral live in South Africa
Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced that the 90-year-old Anglican archbishop will be sent off with a category one special funeral, a procession that will have elements of military ceremonial honours. This type of special funeral is reserved for “persons of extraordinary credentials.”
As it was the wish of Tutu, the funeral will not be an elaborate affair attended by his followers and friends of high esteem. In fact, it was the archbishop’s instruction to ensure that his send-off is in line with COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
Therefore, the procession will only be attended by close friends and relatives, not exceeding 100 attendees. The occasion will be streamed live on South African news channels, however, and you can also tune in below.
