The blaze quickly grew out of control, prompting emergency backburning operations that extended through the night.
According to a statement issued by the Garden Route District Municipality, the wildfire is now 70% contained.
Firefighters successfully closed out backburning efforts on the southwesterly and northwesterly flanks by 06:00, ensuring that no structures were lost during the night’s operations.
However, today’s weather conditions remain unfavourable, with strong southeasterly winds forecast to complicate containment efforts.
The municipality assured that firefighting teams aim to achieve full containment of the wildfire while simultaneously initiating mop-up operations to prevent re-ignition.
Despite the progress made overnight, the situation remains precarious. Additional backburning operations are planned for this morning as firefighters work tirelessly to bring the blaze under control.
