Franschhoek Pass will be closed from 18:00 on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.
Franschhoek Pass closed on Wednesday – Here’s why
The closure is due to extremely saturated slip areas resulting from the ongoing inclement weather.
The Western Cape Government announced that the earliest the pass will reopen is 10:00 on Thursday, 11 July 2024, provided there is no further movement or deterioration overnight.
Road users are advised to factor in additional travel time and use alternative routes during this period.
“Everyone is working hard to ensure minimal disruption to road users,” the statement read.
Cape Town weather warnings upgraded to Level 8 disruptive rains
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 8 warning for disruptive rain, affecting Cape Town, Drakenstein, and Stellenbosch on Thursday, 11 July 2024.
The forecast indicates 24-hour rainfall accumulations of 40 to 60mm, with mountainous areas potentially receiving between 80 to 100mm of rain.
Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, emphasised the potential severity of the weather, despite the low probability of occurrence.
“We are concerned about the possibility of flooding, mudslides, and rockfalls, and urge people to remain safe, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed through reputable news outlets,” Bredell stated.
Premier Alan Winde reiterated the government’s commitment to mitigating the impact of the severe weather.
“Our Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) and other stakeholders are closely monitoring the series of cold fronts. All Western Cape Government departments are working together to minimise the possible impact of this weather system. Disaster management teams are working tirelessly to keep the public out of harm’s way, and we are very thankful for their efforts,” Winde said.
