The City of Cape Town continues to operate without loadshedding, as Eskom achieves a milestone of 271 consecutive days of uninterrupted power supply.
City of Cape Town power update: Monday, 23 December 2024
This stability is attributed to the national Generation Recovery Plan, which has reduced unplanned outages and improved maintenance strategies during the December summer break.
Eskom’s latest Power Alert highlights an ongoing focus on planned maintenance, which has reached over 8,000MW as many industries close for the festive season.
Additionally, the commissioning process of Kusile Unit 6 is progressing, with the successful first fire on coal completed.
Once fully operational, Kusile Unit 6 is expected to add 800MW to the grid.
Key performance metrics for the year-to-date include:
- Energy Availability Factor (EAF): 62.54%, up from 55.42% during the same period last year.
- Unplanned outages: 10,815MW, down by 2,185MW compared to the summer 2024 base case.
- Diesel savings: R16.06 billion, a 65.4% reduction compared to the same period last year.
Eskom’s available generation capacity of 28,197MW is sufficient to meet today’s forecasted peak demand of 23,956MW, ensuring a stable electricity supply.
