Jewish Community Centre bomb scare: Here are the latest updates
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed the incident occurred on Friday, 6 December 2024, when South African Police Service (SAPS) officers notified his office about the device, reportedly thrown over the front wall of the Centre.
Metro Police are assisting SAPS with the analysis of CCTV footage, with coordination led by the City’s Safety and Security Information Management Services (SSIMS).
The file has been handed to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), a move indicating the seriousness of the case.
“Should the SAPS investigation confirm that this was an attempted attack on the Jewish Community Centre, I know I would speak for all Capetonians in condemning such an attempt in the strongest possible terms,” Mayor Hill-Lewis said.
JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, confirmed that the City is relying on safety technologies, including CCTV, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, and aerial surveillance, to expedite the investigation.
“Through these investments, the City has been able to recover firearms, locate missing persons, and assist SAPS in critical investigations,” Smith noted.
While the nature of the device has not yet been officially confirmed, authorities are treating the incident with caution.
The Jewish Community Centre has not commented on the matter.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
